Paradise 03:25
Come with me now down to the river The pastel shades of Arcadian green will soothe your eyes Come with me to Paradise The soft, gentle breeze through the willows Let your weary head rest, I’ll be your pillow Close your eyes, come with me to Paradise Slow is the river, warm the English sun Wild flowers in the meadow, bees getting drunk Close your eyes, come with me to Paradise Swans swerve the boats and ignore the laughter of high spirited youth splashing in the water Close your eyes, come with to Paradise
2.
Forlorn Hope 04:13
We are the forlorn hope We’re the first in the line to go over the top We’ll be the first ones to die Remember me, remember me, remember me my love When I’m under the earth Remember this, remember this, remember this my love I was the one who died first We are the forlorn hope but they say that hope kills I’ve accepted my fate Darling please say that you will We are the forlorn hope They’ve already marked out our graves in a bleak field Darling this is all that I ask We’re the uncomfortable truth We’re the thorns in their sides We are what they will never know True valour is sacrifice We are the forlorn hope We’re angels not men There’s a strange kind of calmness knowing that this is the end We are the forlorn hope Don’t forget who we are We’re the reason you live We’re not cannon fodder
3.
Soho Lights 04:55
You and the Soho lights, where are you now? The dreams that we once shared, where did they go? The world belonged to us and we were free Now gone and disappeared into a memory The Soho lights, oh how I miss you The love of my life slipped through my fingers In the Soho rain, oh how they shimmered And I wish I could be with you in those lights again A fool’s paradise where poets roamed Two doomed lovers wasting time in the pale blue glow Down Wardour Street to China Town Through alleyways when the sun went down The lights would shine, our hearts would stir Time to greet the night once more For a moment all of this was ours the dirty streets and the seedy bars As soon as it began it was gone Never to return

You never wanted to be famous anyway It was only a dream to fill the day In the shadows reaching for the top You drank the poison and swallowed every drop Now you’re a rabbit caught in the headlights and you can’t get out Yeah, you’re a rabbit caught in the headlights and there’s no way out Blinded by the flashing lights Caught between the wrong and right That’s the story of your life Stranded there in no man’s land Reaching for a helping hand They don’t seem to understand You never wanted all the glamour and the glitz But trying to kick it is such a bitch
5.
Silver morning all on my own Watching a movie with the subtitles on And I’ll drift away into a memory Silver morning no-one to hold Like we used to until the end credits rolled So I’ll drift away into another day Where did those sweet times go? Where did those sweet times go? Now there’s just me alone on a silver morning Silver morning No popcorn to share The seats are all empty So I’ll disappear And I while away the hours in a lonely day Those times together just disappeared Sometimes I wonder where did they go? Silver morning step out into the rain And tomorrow I’ll be back here again When I’ll drift away into a memory

4am 05:04
The lights of town are fading fast It’s 4am I’m heading back Left your place far behind And there’s no going back this time I surrender, it’s time to move on And find a new place It’s time for the healing It’s time to be leaving The open road full speed ahead This heavy load is off my back The freshest cuts, the deepest wounds Still feel so raw but is over now In the beginning I thought it was enough Just to myself how stupid I was How stupid I was to believe that was true You tore me apart made me feel like a fool How stupid I was

Sunday morning the light is creeping Through the curtains, she’s wide awake On the death strip, someone’s shooting She lights a cigarette plays Roxy Music These days will never end She is an exile in this land Sha-la-la-la She surfed the scene Sha-la-la-la She rode the wave Sha-la-la-la All the drinks were free Sha-la-la-la Tomorrow never came She was the queen of the world The Berlin Girl Sunday evening, the night is waiting For beautiful losers to take the stage Sipping vodka and coca cola She haunts the party like a pretty ghost These days will never end She is a stranger in this land Sha-la-la-la She surfed the scene Sha-la-la-la she rode the wave Sha-la-la-la All the drinks were free Sha-la-la-la tomorrow never came She was the queen of the world The Berlin Girl Those days they had to end She is forever in this land Sha-la-la-la She surfed the scene Sha-la-la-la she rode the wave Sha-la-la-la All the drinks were free Sha-la-la-la tomorrow never came She was the queen of the world The Berlin Girl

This empty bed it feels so cold Your postcard read greetings from Rome While you were dining out with him I was deciding to sink or swim The funeral march down Platform 10 I’m practising the art of Zen But I can’t get you off my mind And just one question all the time What am I, what am I, what am I supposed to do now When not in Rome This empty train to Bexleyheath The same routine five days a week But I can’t get you off my mind And just one question all the time You by the Colosseum Me in The Crown Trying hard not to make this bitter pill go down This empty bed It’s late at night I’m desperately swiping left and right Trying to find somebody new I try and try but it’s no use So I’ll have to face the truth That what I’m searching for is you
9.
The New Life 04:44
Take it on the chin That’s all that I can do It’s over and time to wake up Open my eyes and see the truth I’ve been lying to myself I knew our love had flown It’s time to face the music on my own Here it comes the new life Like a sunrise Breaking through the clouds On a brand new day Here it comes tomorrow Yesterday’s sorrows Disappear like clouds after the rain Spend the night alone in a hotel by the sea I sit in some quiet corner Dreaming about tomorrow Take a walk along the bay Watch the ships go on their way Into a new horizon and disappear Dodging the day trippers down by the quay I walk to the edge where the land meets the sea Hope rising up from my wandering soul The pain is still there but it’s under control
10.
Epitaph 05:01
Tell me the secret of a life well spent Wrap me in a blanket and say Amen I did what I did and I regret nothing Let love be my judge If I am a loser then what is it for All the naysayers I’ll just ignore I said what I said and if it breaks their law Let love be my judge In the churchyard there’s a pale white stone Of a sinner that didn’t repent His epitaph is made of four small words A life well spent Maybe things would have been different if I’d taken heed of advice I was given where would I be? But I didn’t listen because I believed That love would be my judge Now I’m the Autumn of my years I am forgiven there’s no more tears As memories of summer disappear Let love be my judge

about

As lead vocalist of the band B-Movie, his singles are regarded as classics of the post-punk era; the band, having been described as ‘far too good for the confines of fashion’; and his rich baritone has being called ‘the quintessential English voice.’

But despite a musical career stretching back over 40 years, Steve Hovington remains a relative unknown to most music fans, a fact cheekily alluded to in the title of his new solo album, Audience with Myself.

Hailing from north Nottinghamshire, England, he began his career as lead singer and main songwriter with B-Movie, best known for their early 80s, Some Bizarre singles, Remembrance Day and Nowhere Girl, which although relative commercial failures at the time, are now regarded as classics of the post-punk / new wave era.

With Hovington’s distinctive baritone voice and introspective lyrics to the fore, B-Movie had more in common with Joy Division than Duran Duran, whom they opened for on their first UK tour. A music critic of the time noted the band were ‘as out of place as plaster ducks on a hi-tech wall, far too good for the confines of fashion.’

The tension between record company and band induced pressure for commercial mainstream success but with a desire to stay true to their edgier, outsider synth-rock, exemplified on their 1981 John Peel radio session, this was ultimately their undoing and B-Movie never achieved the kind of success that their powerful atmospheric music deserved.

Post B-Movie, Hovington embarked on an eclectic range of musical projects from the acoustic flavoured One, whose album ‘Upstream’ released on Chrysalis Records prompted one reviewer to hail Hovington as ‘the quintessential English voice’ to a collaboration with trance/big beat artists Amethyst, on their album ‘Golden Fish Fever’

Disillusioned with the music industry, Hovington moved away in the nineties to develop a new career in his other great passion, wine. His non fiction book, ‘The Grape Escape: One Man’s Journey from Vinyl to Vine,’ a part DIY winemaking adventure in the south of France and part memoir of living the dream as an 80s pop musician and its aftermath, was described by wine-pages.com as ‘a really great feel good read, that I can thoroughly recommend.’

After a hiatus of two decades the original members of B-Movie reformed in 2004 and have gone on to release two studio albums, ‘Age of Illusion’ (No Emb Blanc, 2013) and ‘Climate of Fear’ (Cleopatra, 2016) as well as several EPs. The enduring popularity of their best known songs combined with new material has led to the emergence of a new audience and regular shows across Europe.
2022 marks the 40th anniversary of the release of Nowhere Girl.

In 2013, Hovington released a stripped back solo album ‘Coming of Age’ as Steve Hovington and The Fountain of Youth. Recorded in France with French musicians, it blended heartfelt, reflective ballads such as ‘Days of Our Lives’ and ‘America in the Rain’ with witty, up tempo tracks such as ‘National Pornographic’ and ‘Downstairs.’

At the beginning of 2020 just before the start of the Covid pandemic, Hovington and long time collaborator Keith Phillips began recording Audience with Myself at Half Ton Studios in Cambridge. Over the next few months the album began to take shape, featuring guest appearances from Joshua Lynch on cello and B-Movie drummer Graham Boffey.
The album showcases a songwriter and vocalist at the top of his game. Scott Walker, Lou Reed, Leonard Cohen, Lloyd Cole, Richard Hawley and even Serge Gainsbourg spring to mind on a deeply personal album, rich in soaring melodies and evocative lyrics.

From the sublime opening track ‘Paradise’, a pastoral love poem to a Cambridge beauty spot, to the jaunty folk-rock of ‘Forlorn Hope’ reciting the final letter of a doomed soldier on the front line to his lover, to ‘Soho Lights’, a soaring torch song lamenting a star crossed romance or the blissful insouciance of youth recounted in singalong ‘The Berlin Girl’ to the defiant words of an unrepentant sinner on the epic final track ‘Epitaph’, Audience with Myself encapsulates all that is best about Steve Hovington - the songwriting craftsman, singer and musician.
