about

It’s true to say that I’ve written one or two war themed songs in my time. This is possibly the most direct and visceral of all, in which a doomed soldier on the front line whilst waiting for the whistle to go over the top, writes a final message to his loved one expressing the hope that his impending death is not futile and his sacrifice will be remembered long after the lives of his so called superiors in bunkers safe behind the lines.
Despite the doomy lyrical content, musically the song is quite upbeat and jaunty with a folk-rock feel. I like that contrast which lends a triumphant air to the doomed soldiers wishes

lyrics

We are the forlorn hope
We’re the first in the line to go over the top
We’ll be the first ones to die

Remember me, remember me, remember me my love
When I’m under the earth
Remember this, remember this, remember this my love
I was the one who died first

We are the forlorn hope but they say that hope kills
I’ve accepted my fate
Darling please say that you will

We are the forlorn hope
They’ve already marked out our graves in a bleak field
Darling this is all that I ask

We’re the uncomfortable truth
We’re the thorns in their sides
We are what they will never know
True valour is sacrifice

We are the forlorn hope
We’re angels not men
There’s a strange kind of calmness knowing that this is the end

We are the forlorn hope
Don’t forget who we are
We’re the reason you live
We’re not cannon fodder
