about

This song is in many ways the centre piece of the album. Another love letter to a particular time and place, this time Soho, London in the early 1980s. It was where B-Movie recorded their best known singles and briefly rubbed shoulders with the great and good of the time. It is a song about loss, not only of a girl whom I met, fell for then lost but also a time and rebellious spirit that has gone and will never be replaced.
Musically, Scott Walker is an obvious influence. I wanted to explore my voice a bit and pitch it firmly within my baritone range which previously I had perhaps been reluctant to do. Keith’s exquisite electric piano melody has an atmospheric, late night cinematic feel to it and Graham shows what a versatile drummer he is. As a bass player by trade, I’m actually quite proud of my electric guitar solo which we sewed together out of two separate solos. Thin Lizzy eat your heart out :)

lyrics

You and the Soho lights, where are you now?
The dreams that we once shared, where did they go?
The world belonged to us and we were free
Now gone and disappeared into a memory

The Soho lights, oh how I miss you
The love of my life slipped through my fingers
In the Soho rain, oh how they shimmered
And I wish I could be with you in those lights again

A fool’s paradise where poets roamed
Two doomed lovers wasting time in the pale blue glow

Down Wardour Street to China Town
Through alleyways when the sun went down
The lights would shine, our hearts would stir
Time to greet the night once more
For a moment all of this was ours
the dirty streets and the seedy bars
As soon as it began it was gone
Never to return
